I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. And I’ll probably continue to say it no matter the fashion fad or trend of the moment. I adore high waisted pants (high-rise fashion). Don’t get me wrong, I love hip hugger and low rise pants also, but there is something alluring and aesthetically pleasing when someone wears a pair of high waisted pants well!
Pants are an item of clothing worn from the waist or hips down to the ankles, covering both legs separately. High waisted or high-rise pants are a garment designed to sit high on, or above, the wearer’s hips, the belt area hugging the waist.

High Waisted Pants Fun Fact: Due to the longer length of material and the accenting of the waist from the hips, high waisted pants create a long, lean look for the wearer.
In Western culture, high waisted pants tend to have long zippers, ranging from about 7 to 10 inches long, and leave the navel completely covered or barely showing. Zipper lengths are not to be confused with rises. High waisted pants have rises typically 10 inches long or longer.
In European menswear, pants sat level with the navel until the 1950s, and were help up by a pair of suspenders. During the 1940s, Zoot suiters wore pants with a waistband so high that they often reached the chest.
High waisted pleated pants look adorable. Pleats just below the waistband on the front typify many styles of formal and casual pants, including suit trousers and khakis. There may be one, two, or three pleats, which may face either direction. When the pleats are open towards the pockets they are called reverse pleats (typical of most trousers today) and when the pleats open toward the fly or zipper they are known as forward pleats.
Another cute way to spice up a pair of high waisted pants are cuffs (much like cuffs on a pair of denim jeans). A cuff finishes the legs by hemming the bottom to prevent fraying. Pants with turn-ups/cuffs after hemming are rolled outward and sometimes ironed or stitched into place.
High Waisted Pants Fashion Tip: Since high waisted pants show off the waist and elongate the legs, the pants look great when worn with a tucked in blouse or a crop top. Add a stylish, fancy belt for the final touch!
Go high-fashion in high waisted pants!
During the mid 2010, high waisted pants underwent a revival among younger women, in reaction to low rise skinny jeans worn previously. These so called “mom jeans” remained tight in the leg, but had a more relaxed fit in the waist. Female celebrities who were seen in high rise clothing included Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Selena Gomez.
High Waisted Pants Fun Fact: High waisted pants does not equal “mom jeans.” High waisted pants, when worn right (often with a high heel and modern top) rocks a high fashion look for all ages! Glamorous, gorgeous, sexy!
Pants Fun Fact: In May 2004, in Louisiana, United States, Democrat and state legislator Derrick Shepherd proposed a bill that would make it a crime to appear in public wearing trousers below the waist and thereby exposing one’s skin or “intimate clothing.” The Louisiana bill did not pass.
In California, United States, Government Code Section 12947.5 (California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA)) expressly protects the right to wear pants.
We retain our right to show up to work rocking a vogue pair of high waisted pants (unless we wear a standard uniform, of course)!
Pants Fun Fact: In the United Kingdom and Ireland the words “trousers” or “slacks” were historically used for women’s trousers. In Scotland, trousers are occasionally known as trews, which is the historic root of the word “trousers.” In North America and Australia pants is the general category term.
Pants, slacks or trousers…when they button or zip at the waist you’re always dressed in good taste!
Generally, when dressed in high waisted pants, you don’t want to cover the waist. If you need a jacket, a waist jacket or waist-length sweater is the best way to go.
“I don’t want to waste my money. I want a nice pair of pants that will remain in style.”
“It’s never a waste to go with high waisted pants. Adorable and well worth while.”
“I can go with a wide leg pant or a straight legged pant. Perhaps a palazzo will do.”
“And celebrate such a classic look with a flashy high heeled shoe.”
“I must get a pair of high waisted pants for my closet right now. I can’t wait.”
“You must hurry. The store closes at 8:00 and you cannot be late.”
High waisted pants: Doesn’t your closet deserve a pair?
