Whether you have pierced ears or closed, solid earlobes, there is no denying that large, long, dangling earrings add a touch of class and glamour to any outfit. With hair worn up or down, large bulky earrings or long elegant earrings act like a frame for your face. Fancy, darling earring bling!
An earring is a piece of jewelry attached to the ear via a piercing in the earlobe or other external parts of the ear, or in the case of clip earrings, which clip onto the earlobe. Earrings are worn by both sexes, although more common among women, and have been used by different civilizations in different times.
I tend to favor large, dangling earrings over studs or posts. Large earrings are more noticeable and help highlight your face, even if your hair is worn down and covers your ears.
Rock your way into fashion bling in big, round, knockout earrings!
Earring components may be made of any number of materials, including metal, plastic, glass, precious stone, beads, wood and bone. Designs range from small loops and studs to larger plates and dangling, flowing items.
Dang, your dangling earrings are dang darling!
Earring Fun Fact: Ear piercing is one of the oldest known forms of body modification, with artistic and written references from cultures around the world dating back to early history. Early evidence of earrings worn by men can be seen in archeological evidence from Persepolis in ancient Persia. The carved images of soldiers of the Persian Empire, displayed on some of the surviving walls of the palace, show them wearing an earring.
Earring Not So Fun Fact: For as attractive and stylish that large, dangling earrings are, heavy earrings worn over an extended period of time may lead to the stretching of the earlobe piercing. To avoid this, only wear heavy earrings occasionally, or never. I tend to find numerous large, dangling, beautiful pierced earrings that are also light and don’t stretch the earlobe!
If you’re looking for a fun, playful, signature look, try wearing a long, large, elegant earring in only one ear. This looks lovely, with a spice of edge!
For a look that says I’m confident and cool, only one extremely gorgeous earring will do.
The One Earring Fashion Tip: If you choose to wear one singular fabulous earring bling, there will inevitably be someone that points out that you seem to have lost an earring. Merely smile politely and say thank you. If they start to look around the floor for you, you may want to tell them one individual earring rocks your own individual style!
In India, nearly all Hindu girls and some boys get their ears pierced in the religious ceremony known as Kharnavedha before they are about five years old. Infants may get their ears pierced as early as several days after their birth. Similar customs are practiced in other Asian countries, including Nepal, Sri Lanka and Laos. Traditionally, most males wait to get their ears pierced until they have reached young adulthood.
Types of Pierced Earrings:
- Stud Earrings: These earrings appear to float on the earlobe without a visible form of connection. Tiny and to the point!
- Hoop Earrings: These earrings are circular or semi-circular in design and look similar to a ring.
- Drop Earrings: Drop earrings attach to the earlobe and feature a gemstone or ornament that dangles from a chain, hoop or similar object.
- Dangle Earrings: These earrings flow from the bottoms of the earlobes and are available in various lengths, from a few inches below the lobe all the way to or past the shoulder.
- Barbell Earrings: Barbell earrings get their name from their resemblance to a barbell, generally coming in the form of a metal bar with an orb on either end.
- Ear Thread (Ear String/Threaders): A chain that is thin enough to slip into the earhole, and come back out, and dangles.
Types of Clip On Earrings:
- Clip Ons
- Magnetic Earrings
- Stick-On Earrings
- Ear Hooks
- Ear Screws
- Ear Cuffs
Whether you prefer to wear pierced earrings or clips, an outfit that is accented with a fabulous pair of earrings looks fashionably hip!
Earring Fun Fact: Permanent Earrings – Where most earrings worn in the western world are designed to be removed easily and changed at will, earrings can also be permanent (non-removable). They appear today in the form of large gauge rings which are difficult or impossible for a person to remove without assistance.
Ear Piercing Techniques in a Quick Nutshell: To pierce an ear, generally a nurse or other trained professional will perform the procedure, either pushing a sharpened and sterilized starter earring through the earlobe by hand, or using an ear piercing instrument modified from the design used by physicians. The ear will be frozen and sanitized to eliminate pain and infection.
Go large with dangling earring bling!
