Her father was attending Michigan State University when Nancy was born, and after his graduation, her parents moved the family to Southern California, where Mangano grew up. She has one older sister, Victoria (Vicki) and was raised in the Roman Catholic religion.

According to Mangano, while she was working at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, she decided that it would be “much more fun to play an investigator on TV as opposed to being one in real life”, and consequently changed her major to Communications.[4]
